SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES,
SOOCHOW UNIVERSITY, TAIWAN
The Humanist-Social Research Office-GIS Technology and Support of
Teaching
Center
Center Description
The GIS Technology and Support of Teaching Center (
GIS-TST
Center ) is one of the most important cross-departmental units in
Soochow
University . Belonging to the
School of
Arts and Social Sciences, The GIS-TST Center serves professors from different departments and provides database and thematic maps for mainly teaching and also researching purposes. As the diminishing of historical landscapes and other highly changing humanist-social space of Taiwan, the technology of geographic information system (GIS) is even more important these days, which not only needs to fulfill the academic demands but also able to create a space justice for the daily life of human being. However, this valuable technology used to be limited by both the dominant natural science and the overlook of social world.
In recent years, Professor Mo Li Li(莫藜藜) , the current dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences, and the former dean, Siu-Keung Wong(黃兆強), all have encouraged for converting part of the GIS-related research project to a more teaching-oriented one, especially on the Localizing GISology project(地方學GIS). This goal is intended to increase the teaching energy that results from the application of GIS technology to the local level, such as the regions of
Taipei 's Sheji island and Tianmu etc. Leading by Professor C.S. Stone SHIH(石計生), the director of GIS-TST Center, this project creates a geographic information system (GIS) and global position system (GPS) in conjunction with social investigation are proposed to establish the database from humanist-social and natural environment. In addition, the geospatial informative framework will also be used to study the possibility of using modern technology to increase the understanding of the local and the global.
The overall goal of the
GIS-TST
Center is to investigate the humanist-social and environmental impacts from the real world and to seek an alternative to increase the teaching and research energy for the
Soochow
University .
To achieve this goal, a considerable amount of information and database is necessary to address the social, political, historical, educational and humanist issues, which heavily rely on information exchange and discussion among these complex groups. An ESRI-global ArcGIS public participatory geographic information system that provides two-way geospatial/environmental information and an informative knowledge among participants is an efficient way to acquire and exchange the desirable information.
The
GIS-TST
Center objects include:
1. Establish a geospatial infrastructure for information exchange and public/private decisions:
◆Create a public participatory GIS system that allows information exchange and provide visual presentation on the change of the regional and global world.
◆Use GPS-GIS-PDA to document the change of humanist-social pattern and environmental assessments.
◆ Experimental design to use 3D GIS and Mobile GIS technologies to provide semi-real time information for the trajectory of human daily movement and the improvement of creative teaching and research.
◆Experimental design to use modern technology to establish a department-oriented data warehouse and thematic digital informative framework.
◆Experimental design to establish a university-wide system to increase the competitive energy in the light of GIS.
◆To improve the cross-cultural and cross-country cooperation in the future.
2. Provide GIS-related teaching, applying education and research:
◆Promote the teacher's awareness on the change of land, environmental, history, society, politics and economy via GIS training.
◆Using GIS in conjunction with Spacial technology to establish a educational framework for teaching and research.

GIS-TST
Center has one director, eight co-directors and four part-time research assistants.
